Antique Bing Germany Tin Litho Leviathan Vaterland Clockwork Toy Boat Ship + Key
Today we are happy to offer for sale a wonderful antique early 1900s S. Leviathan tin clockwork toy boat! Bing or Gebrüder Bing ("Bing Brothers") was a German toy company founded in 1863 in Nuremberg, Germany by two brothers, Ignaz Bing and Adolf Bing, originally producing metal kitchen utensils. By the early 20th century, Bing was the largest toy company in the world, and Bing's factory in Nuremberg was the largest toy factory in the world.

Although Bing produced numerous toys, it is best remembered today for toy trains and live steam powered toys. In addition to toys it made scientific and educational novelties, and a huge range of kitchenware, tableware, office equipment, record players, electrical goods and so on. The company was defunct in 1933. SS Leviathan, originally built as Vaterland (meaning "Fatherland" in German), was an ocean liner which regularly crossed the North Atlantic from 1914 to 1934.

The second of three sister ships built for Germany's Hamburg America Line for their transatlantic passenger service, she sailed as Vaterland for less than a year before her early career was halted by the start of World War I. In 1917, she was seized by the U. She would become known by this name for the majority of her career, both as a troopship during World War I and later as the flagship of the United States Lines.

The liner was scrapped in 1938. This wonderful model dates between 1917 and 1932 is nicely crafted and detailed. The piece features a tin litho metal body and is shaped like the S. Leviathan, including two masks with flying red flags.

The piece features the original paint work and includes the winding key. The clockwork mechanism is in perfect working condition and when wound it spins the propeller. The boat is marked at the stern with the Bing logo. Also included is a child's metal nameplate ("Rowland").

The model presents well and is in very good antique condition, with minor wear and patina commensurate with age. There is very minimal scattered loss to painted finish.

This rare model will make a wonderful addition to any ocean liner and tin litho wind-up toy collection... Dimensions: 5-1/4" in height, 8-3/8" in length, 2 in depth.
