ALPS SHOPPING SUZY TIN & CELLULOID WIND UP TOY OCCUPIED JAPAN - YouTube. PLEASE READ THE ENTIRE LISTING & VIEW ALL 11 PHOTOS BEFORE PURCHASING Thank you. We are pleased to present for sale an extremely rare Occupied Japan tin and celluloid wind up black lady Suzy Shopper toy in the original box manufactured by ALPS Toy Co. This toy has spent the past 30 years in storage as part of the private collection of Walter Strauss, the founder of Frankonia Toys. His collection had two of these Alps Shopping Suzy toys in their original boxes.

We were told the other is in a museum in the mid west. After an extensive search of both the internet and our own toy reference library we were unable to locate another example of this rare and wonderful Black Americana toy. This Alps Shopping Suzy winds easily, just a few turns of the key and she'll travel a dizzying course spinning on a dime changing her direction then off she goes again; all while she's raising and lowering her painted tin umbrella in her left hand and swinging her tin litho basket on her right arm.

This extremely rare tin and celluloid wind up toy (tin body and arms with a celluloid head) is in near mint condition. It has bold colors and very minor paint loss. The celluloid head is excellent with no damage and nice bold colors as well. The original paper box has had tears repaired from inside, the flaps reinforced, and there is a small piece missing at the top of one panel (see photos #3, 4, 5, 6, & 7). Please look at the photos carefully.

The good news is that the colors on the box are strong, all the flaps are in place, and the repairs were nicely done and they do not distract from overall appearance of the box. The box measures 4 3/4" tall by 2 1/4" by 2.

The toy is just slightly smaller than the box in overall height and width. We have included a replacement winding key that works well. Whether this toy was originally a sample, a short production run, a prototype, or how it ended up in the private collection of a well known 1950's & 60's toy importer we don't know, but we do believe it is one of only two known examples. It is made by Alps which is noted on all four sides as well as the top and bottom of the box, it's in near mint condition, it comes with the original box, and it was manufactured only during the short period of the US Occupation of Japan 1945 -1952 (both the box and the bottom of the toy are marked "Made in Occupied Japan"). What an excellent addition this extremely rare Alps Shopping Suzy toy in the original box will make to the collection of a serious tin & celluloid, vintage wind up, or Japanese toy collector!
