This fully working mechanical wind-up toy tabby kitten was produced in West Germany circa 1950. When the key is turned on this all original example the peek a boo kitten slowly raises its head, looks around and then just as slowly, lowers itself back into its basket - of course the mechanism based upon the famous 19th century Roullet and Decamps Rabbit in Cabbage automaton. To the interior the basket has retained its decorative floral inner card lining which reads'containers made in Western Germany'. We have seen only one more identical example of this rare toy.
Our example is missing the original manufactures label. The small circular label would have displayed a small monkey head and a letter'C' and'M42 West Germany Original'. Our tabby kitten is covered in plush type fur and has green plastic eyes, a sweet orange plastic nose, original red felt tongue and original red silk neck ribbon.
Our adorable example is complete with its original key. Measuring: Height 8.25 inch (21.5 cm). Width 6.25 inch (16 cm).
Depth 4.5 inch (11.5 cm). Condition: This cutey is in good working condition. There is some age related darkening to the polka dot frilled fabric that can be seen around the top of the basket. The kitten's fur has darkened slightly with age and there is a loose thread seen to his left ear tip. There is some natural surface wear to blue woven plastic covered wicker basket, which is to be expected. There are three tiny less than 1 mm holes to the blue plastic wrapped handle. This is a wonderful, all original and fully working example of a very rare 1950s toy. Please note the items shown in the final image are not.
