Lil Abner was a beloved. That ran from 1934 until 1977.....

The story chronicled the absurdities of daily life in the fictional Appalachian town of Dogpatch...... Lil Abner was created in 1934 by cartoonist. The comic strip abounded in stereotypes of Appalachia, Its title character. Abner Yokum, was a handsome, muscle-bound hillbilly, as lazy as he was dull witted..... Like Abner, most of the men of Dogpatch were cast as essentially useless to society, all the real work was done by the wimmenfolk, One such woman was the curvaceous and beautiful yet hard-working Daisy Mae Scragg, who was hopelessly in love with Abner and pursued him fruitlessly for years before they finally married in 1952......

Another was Abners mother, Mammy, the unofficial mayor of Dogpatch, who smoked a corncob pipe and kept the Yokum household running while her lazy, illiterate husband, Pappy, did little more than lie about........ Lil Abner was so popular among fans that during its run that Al Capp was featured on the covers of both Time and Life magazines....... We have a couple of pretty rare items here folk's....... A and manufactured by the Unique Art Mfg. The Unique Art Manufacturing Company was an American toy company, founded in 1916, based in Newark, New Jersey that made inexpensive toys, including wind-up mechanical toys, out of lithographed tin..... Unique Art's president, Sammy Bergman, was a good friend of toy magnate Louis Marx, and the two men's companies at times cooperated, with Marx providing tooling to Unique and sometimes acting as a distributor for Unique Art products...... Unique Art's eventual fate is unclear but the company appears to have disappeared by 1952......

This old toy has seen better days, but its still its a lot of fun and the perfect display piece for any collector..... Its not in working shape and its missing a few pieces, mainly one of Pappy's arms and Mammy, who would be on top of the piano......

We also have this sweet, old comic strip from November 13th' 1977...... This was the final Sunday printing of the Lil Abner comic.....

The paper is aged and a bit weathered, however the colors are still bright and the artwork is vivid..... We put it in a custom oak frame to preserve it, which measurers 16 1/4" by 8 1/8"..... This is a real find for any collector....... All the items we have for sale are described as accurately as possible and to the best of our ability.... Thanks so much for visiting Finds From The Road we hope you find what your looking for......
